Play a Game of Cat and Mouse

Stufe: Sekundarstufe II
Bewegungsfeld: Spielen
Disziplin/Sportart: Volleyball

Fallbeschreibung:

High school 11 school year, monoeducational, men. Sports teacher: female

As the new school year starts, we get a new young physical education teacher. In the first lesson we notice that she’s a bit stricter than previous teachers, but we don’t think much of it. After the warm-up we’re meant to play volleyball and, consequently, have to divide into four groups. Motivated and ready to play, me and my three friends gather together as we want to play on the same team (since we don't have a lot of other friends in our class). The moment the new teacher realises that we started building teams on our own, she tells all of us to stand in a line and assigns us numbers from 1-4 so that each of us is in a separate team. Demoralised we start playing volleyball with all of us separated for the rest of the lesson.

Since we surely didn’t want that to happen again, we had a plan for the next P.E. lesson. As she started to assign numbers again, we arranged ourselves in such a way that always three other students would stand between us. This strategy worked for some time, and we enjoyed our P.E. class greatly. It worked until the teacher got suspicious about us always being on the same team. As a result of this she started to randomly assign the numbers in no particular order. As we knew this would happen at some point, me and my friends started to lie about our assigned numbers to be on the same team. This again worked for some time. To counteract our lies, the next thing the teacher tried, was to hand out sports sashes of different colours. Since it was easy to just exchange these sashes with other students, for some reason me and my friends would still end up on the same team again. Furthermore, if she confronted us with scheming allegations, we mockingly explained the circumstances as quirks of fate.

Her next strategy to separate our small group, was to draw cards. But for the same reason as before this strategy proved to be rather unsuccessful for her. It got to a point where she memorised the colour of sashes she gave us and then bringing the whole P.E. class to a halt, until the four of us changed our sashes back to our original colour/team. This «cat and mouse game» went on for almost half a year before she finally gave up and let us play on the same team.
